Why Adolescence is a Must-Watch Netflix Mini-Series for Everyone

Table of Contents
I love when I come across thought-provoking series like this. I can totally see why “Adolescence” is raving all over the internet—because, honestly, why wouldn’t it? In this mini Netflix series, everything is just perfect.
All the actors did an amazing job portraying their roles—there’s no doubt about it.
This series sheds light on a really important topic that definitely needed to be addressed on a platform like Netflix. It opens your eyes to the dangers lurking on social media, especially for today’s youth and everyone connected to them.
“Adolescence” is about Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy who is arrested for the murder of Katie Leonard. The investigation unfolds from there, and while you might think Jamie is the obvious culprit, the series takes you on a journey that slowly peels back layers of truth. What I really loved about this show is that it didn’t just focus on the murderer; it also explored the deeper reasons behind why Jamie took such a brutal step in the first place.

My thoughts on this Mini Netflix Series Adolescence
You know, as I watched this series, I couldn’t help but feel that what’s shown is the harsh reality for many households in India.
It doesn’t just start with social media, as Divija Bhasin, a mental health blogger on Instagram, suggested. It actually begins at home.
One of the major concerns highlighted by this series is that, more often than not, a child’s environment at home has a huge impact on their behavior.
How fathers, mothers, or both parents treat their sons and daughters shapes their mental and emotional well-being.
Are they treated with love, care, and patience, or is it all about shouting, yelling, throwing things, or even using belts or slippers to discipline them? Or is it just a matter of having uncontrollable anger issues?
According to this series anger issues can also be generational.
A concerning issue raised in this series is how, in many households, it’s still considered acceptable for boys to show anger, and violent behavior.
The common mindset is, “He’s a boy. Boys are like this.”
This idea shapes many boys’ perception that anger, abuse, and violent behavior are normal.
In the series, it’s shown how Jamie’s father himself was beaten by his father as a child.
This suppressed anger carried through generations, and it became painfully evident in the later parts of the series.
The brutal reality is that this behavior is widely accepted in our society.
That’s one of the reasons why so many boys think this is normal.
We see countless reels these days showing how someone died because of a dispute or argument over something trivial.
And this is the result of that very mindset.
This is where toxic masculinity comes into play, and it’s heartbreaking how society sometimes encourages women to tolerate this kind of behavior. But not all men are the same.
There are plenty of sweet, gentle, and kind men out there.
Men aren’t born to be angry or violent Sadly, though, this type of behavior is common, and it’s what many grow up believing is just “how they’re meant to be.”
Another realization I had from this series is that male rage is very different from female rage. Haven’t we all heard about cases where boys killed girls simply because they rejected their proposals?
Rejecting a guy should be never ever reason for him to harm or kill a girl, or vice versa.
The series also revealed how Jamie Miller believed he could approach Katie when she was at her lowest—because her nudes were circulated—and that she would accept him.
It was one of the most disturbing reasons to see someone propose, but unfortunately, it’s a reality for some. It’s scary, but it’s real.
Another thing that stood out to me was how Jamie treated his female psychiatrist. It was clear that he found it easy to dominate and mistreat her, unlike with male officers.
This gave him the false impression that he was somehow superior to her.
Through this series, I also learned that Jamie was struggling with low self-esteem. He put on a facade of happiness on social media, but deep down, he felt ugly and was a victim of bullying by Katie. However, while this contributed to his state of mind, the true root cause of his anger came from his father.
Now, I’m not justifying Katie’s actions here, but Jamie could have talked to his parents about what he was going through instead of resorting to violence.
The real tragedy is that Jamie’s parents knew he was struggling with uncontrollable anger issues, but despite knowing this, they did nothing to help him. They ignored it, and that’s what ultimately led to the murder of Katie.
I really hope parents can focus on making their kids mentally and emotionally strong, so things like bullying or anger issues don’t have such a profound impact on them.
All of this is a mental game, and once we master it, life can get much easier for everyone.
Honestly, people today don’t always care whether you live or die, which is why it’s so important to do whatever it takes to protect your mental health.
Another thing that struck me in this series was the whole “Incel” and “manosphere” culture. I had never heard of it until I watched this.
According to articles I found online, “Incel” (Involuntary Celibates) refers to a group of men and boys who blame women and society for their lack of romantic success. It’s chilling, right?
And if that wasn’t disturbing enough, the series introduced us to the “manosphere”—an online community of anti-women, anti-feminist men.
Imagine if anyone from this community came into power.
The impact on women would be terrifying.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
